Ahwatukee doesn’t have a downtown events plaza or a city hall of its own. Ahwatukee Foothills is one of the City of Phoenix’s urban villages, tucked between South Mountain and Pecos Road, and its calendar is built by neighbors: a volunteer nonprofit that throws the biggest party of the year, a homeowners association that keeps the Chandler Boulevard lights burning, a branch library that turns a park into a storytime circle, and a Sunday farmers market that dates to 2002.

Here is what is on from mid-November through the end of February, with dates as each organizer publishes them. Plans change, so check the organizer’s page, listed with this article, before you head out.

November: a show, a festival and the lights

The holiday lights on the Chandler Boulevard median, between 24th Street and Desert Foothills Parkway, are the season’s backdrop. The display goes back to 1986, when homebuilder Del Webb strung it up to welcome would-be buyers to the new community. Neighbors kept it going after the builder stepped away, and today the Foothills Association oversees it, with Club West’s association also contributing. The lights go up each November and stay up through the holidays; check the association’s or Light Up Ahwatukee’s pages for this year’s first night. Driving the boulevard after dark is free.

On Saturday, Nov. 14, the Ahwatukee Recreation Center’s Entertainers’ Fall Show brings the doo-wop group MC6 A Cappella to the center’s main hall at 7 p.m. The show is open to the public as well as to members, with reserved seats sold through the center’s ticketing page and in the lobby on weekday mornings until show day.

The same afternoon and again on Saturday, Nov. 21, Ironwood Library’s MakersBase opens at 3 p.m. for children ages 6 to 11: a drop-in makerspace with the materials supplied and no ticket needed.

The big one is Saturday, Nov. 21. Light Up Ahwatukee’s Holiday Festival fills Desert Foothills Park, at 1010 E. Marketplace Way, from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Admission is free. Expect inflatables and rides for children beside Santa’s Village, food trucks, live local performers, and an artisan marketplace of more than 30 Ahwatukee makers and small businesses along the park’s Marketplace Street. After dark, a beer tavern and cocktail garden open for adults. This year marks 30 years since the original Festival of Lights party that once raised money for the boulevard display, and the volunteer nonprofit says its proceeds stay with local charities.

December: run under a million lights

The fifth annual Million Lights 5K starts and finishes at Desert Foothills Park on Saturday, Dec. 19, with a kids’ fun run at 6:30 p.m. and the 5K at 7 p.m. The course runs down Chandler Boulevard beneath the holiday display, and the organizer, Mangled Momentum, is also looking for volunteers.

On Wednesday, Dec. 30, Ironwood Library holds a Winter Puzzle Swap at 4 p.m. for adults and teens. Bring gently used jigsaw puzzles in their original boxes, with every piece, and trade them for new-to-you ones, up to seven per person. Puzzles can be dropped off at the front desk from Monday, Dec. 28. Children’s puzzles aren’t part of the swap.

All season: storytime outdoors and a Sunday market

Ironwood Library takes Family Storytime outside to Pecos Park, 17010 S. 48th St., on Friday mornings at 9:30, weather permitting. The program is for children from birth to age five and their grownups, with songs, stories and movement. Scheduled dates are Nov. 13 and 20; Dec. 4 and 18; Jan. 8, 15, 22 and 29; and Feb. 5, 12, 19 and 26.

Back inside the library at 4333 E. Chandler Blvd., a drop-in chess club meets Mondays at 4 p.m. with a short lesson for beginners before open play for all ages, and teens ages 13 to 17 can join Dungeons & Dragons on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month. Note the closures before you go: the library is closed Nov. 11 for Veterans Day, Nov. 26 for Thanksgiving, Dec. 11 for staff development, Dec. 25 and Jan. 1, and Feb. 15 for Presidents’ Day, and it closes early on Christmas Eve.

Every Sunday, the Ahwatukee Farmers Market sets up in the parking lot of the Ahwatukee Swim and Tennis Center, 4700 E. Warner Road, on its winter schedule from October through May. Look for seasonal produce, herbs and flowers, baked goods, meats and seafood, and local arts and crafts. The market takes Arizona Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program and WIC benefits.

Make an evening of it

The festival and the 5K both land on Chandler Boulevard, and so do two neighborhood places to sit down afterward. Va Bene, the family-owned Italian restaurant at 4647 E. Chandler Blvd., has served Ahwatukee for close to three decades and features live music during the week. Tukee’s Sports Grille, at 4804 E. Chandler Blvd. near Pecos Park, serves wings, burgers and sandwiches with outdoor seating and TVs for the game.

However you spend the season, the lights will be on the boulevard to guide you home.
