Shopping LOCAL in Avondale
A historic avenue of family businesses, cafés that stock local makers, a Saturday market with more than 150 vendors and a library shelf of bargain books: where Avondale shops independent.

Shopping local in Avondale takes a little more looking than strolling one long main street of boutiques. The independent side of the city is spread out: a historic avenue of family businesses, cafés that double as gift shops for local makers, a big Saturday market at the community college and a library shelf of bargain books. Put together, they make for a satisfying weekend of shopping close to home.
Western Avenue, where Avondale began
Avondale's commerce started on what is now Western Avenue. In the 1880s, Billy Moore ran a stage stop, a saloon and a general store at his Coldwater settlement near the Agua Fria crossing, selling supplies to travelers headed between Tucson, northern Arizona and California. Today the city describes Western Avenue, from Central Avenue to Dysart Road, as a walkable street of locally owned small businesses, cultural and urban art and eclectic buildings, and it has said that preserving Old Town protects opportunities for small, independent businesses.
Start at Coldwater Coffeehouse & Bakery at 127 E. Western Ave., a café run by its member-owners that bakes its own sourdough and lists a pastry chef and a market gardener on its team. It sells breakfast and lunch too, and its online shop takes orders for pickup. A few blocks east, The Pasta Factory at 701 E. Western Ave. is a family-owned Italian restaurant run by a father and his four daughters. Besides dine-in, it packages meals to take home, caters and sells gift cards, which makes it an easy stop for a host gift or a night off from cooking.
The avenue also carries everyday errands. Atomic Dog Pet Grooming at 528 E. Western Ave. grooms dogs and cats, a useful thing to know if you want the pup looking sharp for holiday photos. While you're in the neighborhood, the city is building a new Old Town Plaza at Dysart Road and Western Avenue, with illuminated art and history panels, scheduled for completion around the end of 2026.
Near the Civic Center: makers' goods and Avondale souvenirs
On North 114th Avenue, near the Civic Center and The BLVD district, New Penny Cafe does double duty. Along with coffee and its own baked goods, it carries work from about 15 local makers and bakers, including keychains, jewelry, soaps, body scrubs and greeting cards. It's a good place to find a small gift without leaving the city.
For something that says Avondale outright, the Avondale Visitor Center on Civic Center Drive sells Avondale gifts, souvenirs and postcards. Across the campus, the Civic Center Art Gallery inside the Civic Center Library shows rotating exhibitions of local and regional artists, free during library hours.
Books and media for pocket change
Avondale's public libraries run the Library Book Nook, open during library hours. Most items come from donations or weeded library materials: fiction, nonfiction, audiobooks, music CDs and DVDs, priced in coins and small bills. One change to know about: The Turning Page bookstore, which a nonprofit used to run inside the Civic Center Library, no longer operates there, and the libraries are not taking donations right now.
Coffee to take home, along Dysart Road and beyond
A couple of independent cafés sell things to carry home. Modern Grind Coffee, a drive-thru on West Rancho Santa Fe Boulevard, sells whole coffee beans roasted by a family-owned Arizona roaster, along with merchandise and gift cards. On North Dysart Road, Crepella Crepes & Waffles Cafe takes birthday cake orders in addition to its made-to-order crepes and waffles.
Markets on the calendar
The biggest regular gathering of local sellers is the Desert West Market at Estrella Mountain Community College on North Dysart Road. It runs every Saturday morning, and the college says it brings together more than 150 local vendors with food trucks, live music and family activities. The schedule continues through the winter; check the college's events page around the holidays.
The city's own festivals bring vendors too. Avondale Fiesta returns to Historic Western Avenue on Saturday, May 1, 2027, with food, live music, art and culture in Old Town, and Mercados & Melodies, the city's Hispanic Heritage celebration with artisan vendors at the Civic Center amphitheater, is set for Friday, September 17, 2027.
Why it matters here
Avondale is celebrating its 80th year in 2026, and the city has used the occasion to point back to Western Avenue's mix of historic buildings and small businesses as part of what gives the place its character. Spending a Saturday between the market, the avenue and a maker's shelf at a café is one way to keep that character going. Before you go, check each business's own site for current hours.
