Shopping LOCAL in Chandler: Boston Street, San Marcos Place and the antique halls of North Arizona Avenue

Western boots, house-made caramels, a jeweler's counter and 58,000 square feet of vintage: where Chandler shops independent, and the markets to plan around this season.

Most Chandler shopping trips start in a parking lot off a big arterial road. The independent kind starts somewhere else: on the short blocks of West Boston Street and San Marcos Place downtown, in a sprawling antique hall on North Arizona Avenue, and at the monthly markets that turn the downtown streets into a maker's fair. Here is where to go, what each place does well, and the dates worth writing down this season.

West Boston Street: boots, shoes and a jeweler's counter

The Downtown Chandler Community Partnership, the group that promotes the district, describes its shops as locally owned boutiques and specialty stores, and most of them sit within a few doors of each other on West Boston Street.

Saba's Western Wear, at 67 W. Boston St., is where Chandler goes for boots, cowboy hats, jeans, belts and Western shirts, with clothing for men, women and kids. The store also carries hat-care and boot-care supplies, so it is worth bringing questions as well as a shopping list. Its website is being rebuilt, but the store posts that it is open for business as usual.

A few doors down from Saba's, at 71 W. Boston St., Gemsetter & Company is one of downtown's longtime jewelers, with engagement rings, wedding bands, fine jewelry, custom design and other jewelry services. For a gift that will be kept for decades, a conversation at a local jeweler's counter is hard to replace with a website.

Farther east toward Arizona Avenue, Shoe Thrill, at 11 W. Boston St., has been fitting feet since 2012. The shop specializes in European-made comfort shoes with real arch support, and it pitches itself to people who stand all day: teachers, nurses, flight attendants and restaurant workers. If you can't make it during store hours, the shop will book an appointment with a day's notice.

In the same building as Shoe Thrill, Peixoto Coffee's flagship cafe is a natural stop, and its bags of beans make a good gift in their own right. The Peixoto family has grown coffee in Brazil for generations, and the company roasts and sells its own beans alongside coffees from other growers.

San Marcos Place: Arizona-made gifts

Around the corner at 72 S. San Marcos Pl., d'Vine Gourmet is a family business that has been at it since 2003, when it started in Tucson. It makes its own caramels, candies, snacks and mustards in the store, and carries goods from more than a hundred local artists and vendors: Arizona honey, hot sauces, wines, ceramics, candles and cards. The staff build gift baskets to order, which makes it an easy answer for a host, a new neighbor or an out-of-town relative who wants a taste of Arizona.

A short walk away, Vision Gallery at 10 E. Chicago St. is a nonprofit gallery run by the Chandler Cultural Foundation, with exhibitions by working artists. Art Quilts 31: Constructed Softly opens November 14 and runs through January 9, 2027, and Valerie Navarrete's Lurking is on view through January 23.

A note for this winter: the city is renovating Dr. A.J. Chandler Park, and parking along Arizona Avenue is limited while crews work. The city expects the west half of the park to be finished before the holidays and the east half by early spring 2027; the downtown garages remain open.

North Arizona Avenue: an afternoon in the stalls

Merchant Square Antiques, at 1509 N. Arizona Ave., a block south of Warner Road, is a different kind of outing. The 58,000-square-foot hall has been in business for more than 21 years and is filled with booths run by local dealers, each with its own taste: vinyl records, vintage books, old signs, furniture, toys, tools, jewelry and sports memorabilia. Its attached Garment District sells vintage clothing, and once a month the Highland Yard Vintage Market sets up outdoors behind the building with local artisans and vintage sellers.

Give it more time than you think you need. Bring measurements if you are hunting for furniture, and look closely at condition; with secondhand goods, the single object matters more than the category.

Ocotillo: a wine shop with a cafe attached

In south Chandler, Bottle & Bean in the Downtown Ocotillo area pairs a coffee bar and breakfast-and-lunch bistro with a retail wine room. It's a good stop for a bottle to bring to dinner, and it runs a monthly wine club for regulars.

Markets to put on the calendar

Downtown Chandler's Third Thursday market runs on the third Thursday of each month from October through May, with local artists, handmade crafts and live music along the downtown streets, and admission is free. The organizer's 2026-27 themes:

  • November 19: Girls Night Market, featuring women-owned businesses
  • December 17: Holiday Market
  • January 21: Refresh & Restart New Year's Market
  • February 18: Arizona Western Market
  • March 18: Spring Market
  • April 15: Earth Day Vintage Market
  • May 20: Next Chapter Book Market

Downtown's shops also mark Small Business Saturday, the Saturday after Thanksgiving; this year, on November 28, that means live music in the afternoon and free holiday stockings and shopping guides handed out on the Crust Lawn while they last. The Downtown Chandler Farmers Market meets every Saturday morning all year; with the park under renovation, check the market's page for where vendors are on the day.

Even the Chandler Nature Center plays a part: its Owl's Nest Nature Store, inside the center at Veterans Oasis Park, stocks products from local, small, charitable and family-owned businesses.

Why it matters here

The money spent on Boston Street or at a dealer's booth on Arizona Avenue goes to people who live and work nearby, and they are the reason downtown has a character a mall can't copy. At a shop where the caramels are made in back or the owner does the fitting, you can ask why one thing works and another won't, and get a real answer. Start with one errand, stop for coffee, and let the rest of the afternoon find you.
