Family Days in Glendale, Season by Season

Peacocks at Sahuaro Ranch and fishing at Heroes Park when it's cool; libraries, a rock wall and a candy factory tour when it's hot; and the traditions Glendale families mark on the calendar.

In Glendale, a family calendar has two halves. From roughly October through April, the parks, ranch grounds and desert trails are at their best, and weekends can happen almost entirely outdoors. When summer arrives, the plan moves inside: to libraries, recreation centers and a candy factory, with splash pads and pools for the late afternoons. Here is how Glendale families use the year, starting with the season we're in now.

Cool months: get outside

Sahuaro Ranch Park, at 9802 N. 59th Ave., is a favorite for good reason. The park has playgrounds and open fields, and next to them sits the city's historic ranch, where peacocks roam among old ranch buildings, orchards and a rose garden that dates to 1890. The ranch is home to several animals, and the city asks visitors not to feed them. The historic area is open from 6 a.m. to sunset, and the city lists admission as free except during some special events.

Out west, Glendale Heroes Regional Park at 83rd Avenue and Bethany Home Road has a four-acre lake with fishing piers and walking paths. Arizona Game and Fish stocks it year-round through its urban fishing program, so a first fishing trip can be as simple as a short walk from the car. The park also has a playground, a dog park and an X-Court where older kids can bring skateboards and BMX bikes.

For a gentle desert outing, Thunderbird Conservation Park in north Glendale has easy routes like the Flatlander loop and four wildlife viewing blinds along its sedimentation basin, where children can watch for birds quietly. Its trailhead parking lots are being rebuilt one at a time through 2027, so check the city's park page for which entrance is open; the trails themselves stay open.

Families with a child who experiences the world differently might also seek out the Elsie McCarthy Sensory Garden on North 55th Avenue near Orangewood. It was designed for visitors who are visually impaired, with fragrant and textured plants, water features, a tactile map at the entrance and labyrinth rocks to trace by hand, and the city describes it as a peaceful place for everyone.

Hot months: head indoors

Glendale's libraries are the backbone of a summer plan. The Main Library is at 5959 W. Brown St., Foothills Library at 19055 N. 57th Ave. and Heroes Regional Park Library at 6075 N. 83rd Ave., where a stainless steel and glass artwork at the entry celebrates the city's farm history with cotton, sugar beets, quail and dragonflies. At Foothills, look for The Magic Doors, an etched glass piece by artist Kathy Bradford. Cardholders can borrow Culture Passes for free visits to local museums and cultural attractions, and the library also lends activity backpacks and kits. One change this year: Velma Teague Library downtown is closed for repairs, and its events have moved to the Civic Center Annex, 5752 W. Glenn Drive, which the library plans to turn into a temporary full-service branch.

The Foothills Recreation and Aquatics Center, 5600 W. Union Hills Drive, is a reliable air-conditioned option, with a full gym, an indoor walking track and a rock wall. Some areas are free to the public, and daily passes cover the rest.

Then there's candy. Cerreta Candy Company, at 5345 W. Glendale Ave., has been a family business for more than 50 years, on Glendale Avenue since around 1990, and it runs guided factory tours on weekday mornings and early afternoons, so plan around school breaks. Downtown in Catlin Court, Bears & More at 7146 N. 58th Drive has been family-owned since 1992 and stocks teddy bears, classic toys, puzzles and games, which makes it a good place to spend birthday money on a scorching afternoon.

When the heat breaks in the evening, the city's splash pads open for the summer season. In 2026 there were five, including one at Heroes Regional Park, where the city lists admission as free. The Foothills summer aquatics center, with its slides and lazy river, and the Rose Lane Aquatics Center are closed for the season and expected back in summer 2027.

Free and low-cost ideas

Several Glendale outings cost nothing, according to their organizers. Beyond the Heroes splash pad and the Sahuaro Ranch historic area, the Historic Downtown Glendale Merchants Association's Peacock Passport is free: pick one up at the Arizona Information Center inside Memory Lane Trinkets and Treasures, 5836 W. Palmaire Ave., and hunt for metal peacocks around downtown and Sahuaro Ranch, collecting stamps for a small prize. The Chocolate Affaire in February lists free admission and parking. Each July, the city marks Park and Recreation Month with free events; this year's included a family art morning at Sahuaro Ranch, a family play date at four recreation centers and a chance to meet the park rangers.

For an easy family meal afterward, Carolina's Mexican Food on West Greenway Road has served the Valley from original recipes since 1968, and Coyote Oaties at 7005 N. 58th Ave. downtown bakes cookies fresh every day.

Seasonal traditions

Glendale's family traditions cluster in the cool months. Glendale Glitters lights up Murphy Park every evening from a kickoff weekend just after Thanksgiving through New Year's Day. Movies By Moonlight rotates outdoor screenings through neighborhood parks about once a month from fall into spring. On January 30, 2027, the Downtown Glendale Arts and Culture Fest brings live art, music, classic cars and a Kids Zone to Murphy Park. Each February the Chocolate Affaire comes to the Civic Center, and in early March the Glendale Folk and Heritage Festival fills Sahuaro Ranch with performers, workshops and food trucks; the city's special events page posts each year's dates.

Check each organizer's page for times before you go, especially for outdoor events. Then pick a season, pack water and sunscreen, and let the calendar do the planning.
