Shopping LOCAL in Mesa: Main Street, Robson and the Asian District
Family jewelers, a new bookshop, records, plants and pottery downtown, imported groceries on Dobson Road, and the markets that bring them together.

Shopping local in Mesa is less about one big district than about a few close-knit blocks where the owner is often the one behind the counter. Downtown, Main Street west of Center Street and the side streets running off it hold most of the independent shops, and the Downtown Mesa Association's own directory lists more than forty of them, from jewelers and music stores to plant shops and a typewriter dealer. On the west side, Dobson Road carries a different kind of local economy: the Asian District, with its grocers, bakeries and family-run stores. Add the downtown markets, and you have a shopping list that can fill a Saturday.
Main Street and the Macdonald blocks
Start on West Main Street, where some storefronts have been part of the street for decades. Dickson's Jewelers, family-owned and downtown since 1949, is at 54 W. Main St., the kind of place to bring a ring that needs care or a piece you want looked over by someone local.
A block north, the Greenbelt building at 40 N. Macdonald gathers several small shops under one roof, across from the Arizona Museum of Natural History. Beyond Words Bookshop opened its brick-and-mortar store there in July 2025 after starting as a pop-up. Owner Kelly Boggs, a longtime educator, stocks new and used books for every age, with a strong shelf for young readers, and the shop runs a monthly book club, author evenings and free Wednesday morning storytimes for little ones. In the same building, Nile Records sells new and used vinyl, cassettes and CDs, plus band merchandise, and carries tickets for shows at the Nile Theater just down Main Street.
For coffee between stops, Jarrod's Coffee, Tea & Gallery at 109 W. University Dr. doubles as an art space. It showcases featured artists, and its calendar fills with open mics, poetry readings, comedy and still-life art nights, so a cup of tea can easily turn into an evening.
Robson Street and the south side of downtown
Cross Main and head south on Robson Street. At 31 S. Robson, Greenbelt Plants & Pottery sells cacti, succulents, tropicals and houseplants alongside handmade ceramics, and it is running beginner-friendly handbuilding workshops through December, with clay, tools, glazing and firing included. Myke's Pizza, inside the cider taproom in the same building, is a natural place to sit down afterward with a wood-fired pie.
Against the Grain Food, back on Main at 124 W. Main St., is a restaurant that also works as a grocery and bakery for anyone who eats gluten-free. Its shelves carry gluten-free groceries and its own frozen goods, and its bakery case makes bread, buns, cookies and cinnamon rolls in house. In November it takes Thanksgiving pre-orders for a full gluten-free holiday table.
A few blocks east, República Empanada at 204 E. First Ave. sits in a mid-century building in the Southside Heights neighborhood. Beyond its long list of South American empanadas, it is part of the downtown book circuit: Beyond Words holds its book club gatherings there.
The Asian District on Dobson Road
Visit Mesa describes the Asian District as more than 100 restaurants, grocery stores and other businesses along a two-mile stretch of Dobson Road in west Mesa. It is where Mesa shops for imported groceries, hard-to-find ingredients, bubble tea and bakery treats. Mekong Plaza, at 66 S. Dobson Rd. near Main Street, is an easy place to start, with shops and restaurants gathered around one parking lot and open seven days a week. Bring a cooler bag if you plan to stock up.
Markets to put on the calendar
The Downtown Mesa Sunset Market brings local vendors, handmade goods, food and live music to Macdonald and Main on the second Friday of each month. The city's calendar lists the coming dates as November 13 and December 11, 2026, and January 8 and February 12, 2027, and it is free to wander. Several downtown shops stay open late on market nights; Beyond Words, for one, keeps its doors open into the evening. On Sunday mornings outside the summer months, the Downtown Mesa Association also lists the Farm to Mesa Market at 104 E. First Ave., with local produce, baked goods, plants and crafts.
On the evening of Friday, November 27, Merry Main Street opens for the season with a holiday market around Mesa's Christmas tree and the tree lighting, which makes it a good night to start gift shopping on foot.
Why it matters here
Downtown Mesa's merchants are neighbors in a literal sense. The bookshop's book club meets at the empanada restaurant, the record store sells tickets for the theater down the street, and the coffee shop hangs work by the people who drink its coffee. Money spent at a family jeweler or a plant shop on Robson stays in a small circle of businesses that support one another and the events that fill Main Street. The Downtown Mesa Association even sells gift cards that can be spent across participating downtown businesses, which turns a single present into a small vote for the whole district.
Before you go, check each shop's own page for its hours; many downtown stores keep short weekday schedules and longer weekend ones.
