Shopping LOCAL in Scottsdale: Galleries, Books, Markets and Grocers
From Main Street's galleries and a Native-owned art market to a mystery bookstore, Saturday's relocated farmers market and two family Italian grocers, here's where Scottsdale shops independent.

Shopping local in Scottsdale works best on foot and with a loose plan. Old Town packs galleries, Native-owned art, a mystery bookstore and a Saturday market into a few walkable blocks, while two family Italian grocers on either end of the city turn an errand into something you'll look forward to. Here is where to start, and what each stop is known for.
Main Street and Marshall Way: the gallery blocks
The Scottsdale Art District runs along Main Street, sometimes called Gallery Row, from Scottsdale Road to Goldwater Boulevard, then turns north up Marshall Way and crosses Indian School Road toward Fifth Avenue. The Scottsdale Gallery Association, a nonprofit of gallery owners, says Scottsdale is home to more than 100 galleries. Walking the blocks, you move from Western bronzes to glass to contemporary painting within a few doors, and asking about an artist is always welcome.
On Marshall Way, Wilde Meyer Gallery shows changing exhibitions of contemporary work: Western and landscape painting, figurative and abstract pieces, bronze, sculpture and glass. It is an easy gallery to wander into if you are curious rather than shopping for something specific.
On Main Street, Native Art Market at 7215 E. Main St. is a Diné family business and calls itself the first Native-owned gallery in Old Town. Its shelves carry handmade jewelry, pottery, kachina dolls, sand paintings and paintings from hundreds of Indigenous artisans and small businesses, and the market says it prohibits imports and imitations. Next door, the family runs The Frybread Lounge, serving ancestral Southwestern food.
The Main Street store has had a busy year. In October, KJZZ reported that the family had opened a second, nearly identical storefront in Santa Fe because the Scottsdale shop had too many artisans for its space. Co-founder Heather Tracy told the station her family's story starts with her great-grandmother selling her own work at a roadside stand near the Grand Canyon rather than accepting a trading post's low offers.
Fifth Avenue and Goldwater: books and coffee
Fifth Avenue is one of Old Town's long-standing shopping streets, marked by the Bob Parks Horse Fountain, with jewelry shops, boutiques and souvenir stores along the way. Before you set out, pick up a coffee at Cartel Roasting Co. at 7124 E. Fifth Ave. The Arizona roaster, which calls itself community-owned, sells its coffees by the bag as well as by the cup, which makes it a handy stop for a gift.
A short walk east, The Poisoned Pen Bookstore sits at 4014 N. Goldwater Blvd. Barbara G. Peters founded the independent shop in 1989, and it is known for mystery, thrillers, historical and literary fiction and books about the American Southwest, including signed first editions. Its calendar fills with author talks in the fall and winter, including a Local Author Fair this November, a chance to meet writers who live nearby.
Markets and shop walks to plan around
Scottsdale ArtWalk is the city's oldest shopping habit. The Scottsdale Gallery Association says the galleries have opened their doors every Thursday evening since 1975, every week except Thanksgiving, and it is always free. During the cooler months the association also stages themed Gold Palette ArtWalks with longer hours; it has said the next series starts this season, so watch its events page for the dates.
The Old Town Scottsdale Farmers Market has a new address this season. After the City Council approved the move in November 2025, the Saturday market left the parking structure at First Street and Brown Avenue, which the city is expanding, and now sets up in the Scottsdale City Hall parking lot at 3939 N. Drinkwater Blvd. The city lists it on Saturday mornings, with around 100 growers and specialty food makers. It is a natural place to stock up on seasonal produce and specialty foods while chatting with the people who grew or made them.
Grocers and bakers worth the drive
Some of Scottsdale's most satisfying local shopping happens outside Old Town. In south Scottsdale, DeFalco's Italian Eatery, Grocery & Deli at 2334 N. Scottsdale Road has been run by the DeFalco family for more than three generations. Alongside its sandwiches and pizza, it slices meats and cheeses to order, makes Italian sausage daily and stocks Italian groceries, fresh bread, house pasta sauces and wine.
Up north on Via Linda, Andreoli Italian Grocer pairs a restaurant with a deli counter of freshly sliced meats and Italian imports. It is worth a stop when you want a few good things for a dinner at home.
Back near Old Town, Sweet Dee's Bakeshop on Stetson Drive takes custom orders and runs holiday pre-orders for pies and seasonal treats with local pickup. If you are hosting this winter, ordering early is the simple way to bring something homemade without baking it yourself.
Why it matters here
Scottsdale draws visitors from everywhere, and it is easy for residents to leave Old Town to them. But the owners behind these counters are neighbors: families running delis for three generations, gallery owners on the same block for years, Indigenous artists selling their own work. Spending an afternoon with them keeps that character in the city's center. Start with one errand, a book, a bag of coffee, a gift with a story, and let the rest of the walk fill in on its own.
