Eight places in Surprise worth a second look

A heritage trail through the square mile where Surprise began, an old runway under a City Hall sidewalk, a steel saguaro that keeps secrets and award-winning baseball art you can see for free.

Most people know Surprise for its spring training stadium and its long stretches of Bell Road. But the city has a habit of tucking small stories into everyday places: a sidewalk laid along an old airfield runway, a steel saguaro that keeps secrets, a self-guided walk through the square mile where the town began. Here are eight places worth a slower look, most of them free and all of them open to the public.

The Original Town Site and its Women's Heritage Trail

Surprise started in 1938 as a single square mile of farmland that Flora Mae Statler platted and sold as lots; her daughter later recalled that Statler said she would be surprised if the town ever amounted to much. That square mile, just off Grand Avenue, is still called the Original Town Site, and in 2013 the City dedicated a self-guided Surprise Women's Heritage Trail through it. Its north and south loops stop at sites tied to the women who built the town: the building at 12731 W. Grand Avenue that started as the Saylor family's root beer stand and later served as town hall, the rock house the Fulcher family built in the 1940s from stones gathered in the Agua Fria riverbed, and the old community center on Hollyhock Street that a group of local women raised money to build. Some buildings are gone, and the trail tells their stories anyway. Printable maps are on the City Historian's page, and paper copies are in the City Hall lobby.

Confluencia and the new Hollyhock Library

The newest stop in the Original Town Site opened on September 3, 2026: the Surprise Community & Resource Center at 12641 W. Santa Fe Drive, which brings the senior center, resource center and the new Hollyhock Library under one roof. Outside is Confluencia, a public art plaza by Mandy Palasik and James Dinh. Two swirling paths in the paving stand for rivers of the past and future, terraced seating recalls canyon walls, and cloud-shaped steel canopies are cut with cotton-bloom patterns that honor the town's farming roots. The plaza is free to visit.

City Hall, the history wall and the old runway

Surprise City Hall on Civic Center Plaza holds two pieces that tell the city's story. In the Mayor's Atrium, the 60th Anniversary History Wall gathers family photographs, old street signs and a stained-glass window from the original town hall, tracing the city from Statler's lots to the present. Also at City Hall, the mural Surprise! by Kayla Newnam and Luke Watson turns the White Tank Mountains into bright patterns. Then walk to the all-seasons garden south of the parking garage, where the sidewalk follows the exact line of a runway from Luke Auxiliary Field 3, the 'Fighter Field' that once occupied the site.

Arts HQ Gallery and the Xeriscape Demonstration Garden

Next to City Hall, the West Valley Arts Council's Arts HQ Gallery changes its exhibits nearly every month, and admission is free. It has a small gift shop. A short walk west is the Surprise Xeriscape Demonstration Garden, where two sculptures by West Valley high school students, Nature Unwinding and Revitalized Roots, sit among low-water plants. They were made through the council's Gallery 37 summer program.

Bloom Where You're Planted at Community Park

Surprise Community Park, home of the city's urban fishing lake, has had a 20-foot saguaro of mirror-polished stainless steel since 2023. Look at the back: a small figure of a woman, a nod to Flora Statler, cups a hand to her ear, and the artists say whatever you whisper to her rises up the cactus and out through the lights in its blooms. The park is free.

Bounce and Swing at Surprise Stadium

You don't need a ticket to see the stadium's newest art. Bounce, at the first-base entrance, traces the arc of a home run under panels cut with a cotton pattern, and Swing, at third base, is a canopy of more than 200 bats arranged like baseball stitching, with reflective tips that catch light after dark. The pair was recognized this fall with a 2026 CODAawards Top 100 listing and two regional design awards, and both can be seen year-round outside the stadium on Bullard Avenue. Spring training games each February and March are ticketed.

The Vista Center for the Arts

For a ticketed evening, The Vista Center for the Arts on Parkview Place hosts the Surprise Arts Presents series of touring comedy, music, circus and family shows. Tickets are sold at SurpriseArts.com.

Make a day of it

The civic center sits between several independent places to eat. Bonfire Craft Kitchen & Tap House on Bell Road makes its American menu from scratch and has screens for game days. Saigon Kitchen, farther east on Bell, serves Vietnamese dishes from pho to egg rolls. Spencer's Place on Waddell Road is a coffee shop and bistro that trains and employs adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. And if the stadium art has you thinking about heroes, Surprise Comics at Bullard Avenue and Cactus Road commissions its own exclusive variant covers.

Hours and access change from time to time, so check each place's own page before you go.
