Family days in Tempe, season by season
Ranger hikes and fishing lakes in the cool months, a Victorian Christmas and a boat parade in December, and a wave pool for July: how Tempe families can spend the year.

Planning a family day in Tempe comes down to the calendar. From November to April, the parks, the lake paths and the desert preserves are at their best, and the city fills the season with free outdoor events. When summer settles in, families head for water and air conditioning. Here is how a Tempe year can look, with the places the city and local organizers point to.
Late fall: parks, a ranger hike and a jam
This is the season to be outside. Kiwanis Park, at Mill Avenue and All America Way, is the city's 125-acre all-rounder, with a fishing lake, playgrounds, a splash playground, ramadas and room to run. At the north end of town, Papago Park on College Avenue has its own fishing lake and playground, and the desert preserve beside it is where the city's park rangers lead free two-mile guided hikes in the cooler months. The next two are Sunday, November 15, and Sunday, December 13; the hike is rated moderate, and registration is required. Fishing in city parks needs a permit, and dogs must be leashed.
The city also makes the most of fall evenings. This year Kiwanis Park hosted Movies in the Park on October Fridays and Tempe's Family BOO Bash, a free costume parade, dance party and movie night, and the city's Family Fun page posts what comes next. Next up is the sixth annual Tempe Jam on Saturday, November 14, from 6 to 10 p.m. at the Tempe Sports Complex on South Hardy Drive, with free live music, food trucks, dance battles, a drone show and art activities; the city encourages space-themed outfits.
Holiday season: lights, boats and a Victorian Christmas
December brings Tempe's most familiar family traditions. The Fantasy of Lights Street Parade and Tree Lighting fills Mill Avenue on Saturday, November 28, and the Fantasy of Lights Boat Parade on Saturday, December 12, sends decorated boats across Tempe Town Lake while Tempe Beach Park hosts a holiday market, entertainment, photos with Santa and a fireworks finale, all free. The lake was closed to boating in early November after heavy upstream releases, so check the city's news before you go.
Christmas at Petersen House is a quieter tradition. Each December for more than forty years, the museum has dressed the 1892 Victorian on West Southern Avenue for Christmas, drawing on the Danish roots of the family who built it. It opens for free self-guided tours from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on December 5, 6, 12, 13, 19 and 20, with refreshments, activities and music from local high school singers.
After dark, the north wall of the Hayden Flour Mill on Mill Avenue becomes a screen. The city's Milluminate program projects animation and digital art by local artists from 7 to 10 p.m. on select weekends through April, free; upcoming dates include November 20 to 22 and December 4 to 6.
Any season, indoors
The Tempe History Museum, on Southern Avenue near Rural Road next to the Tempe Public Library, is free and open Tuesday through Saturday. Its main gallery tells Tempe's story through interactive displays, and through December 31 the featured exhibit is Ranfla Vida, on local lowrider history. On November 13 and 14, the Grand Canyon State Model Railroaders bring an HO-scale train layout to the museum for Train Days, a free display with drop-in activities for kids. On December 12, the museum hosts a free Azure family concert by the Tetra String Quartet, designed for children and young adults on the autism spectrum and followed by an instrument petting zoo; tickets are required.
For a rainy or scorching afternoon, the Kiwanis Recreation Center has the city's indoor wave pool, one of Tempe's four public pools. Children 7 and under must stay within arm's reach of someone at least 16 in the water.
Summer: water early and often
When the heat arrives, plan outdoor time for early morning; most Tempe parks open at 6 a.m. The city runs four splash play areas, including the one at Kiwanis Park, plus its public pools and swim lessons for all ages and abilities. The indoor wave pool and the history museum make easy midday escapes.
Spring: flowers and art on Mill Avenue
Tempe Blooms fills downtown on January 23 and 24, 2027, with floral installations, live mural painting and a children's area with crafts, games and face painting. The spring Tempe Festival of the Arts returns March 12 to 14, 2027; its fall edition, December 4 to 6, includes a Kids Block. And 2nd Sundays on Mill, the downtown street market, has featured a Kids Market where young sellers offer things they've made; this season's remaining dates are January 10, February 14 and April 11.
Where to eat with kids
Pete's Fish & Chips, family owned since 1947, has a Tempe location on Apache Boulevard near Rural Road, a short drive from the history museum. In South Tempe, Picazzo's Healthy Italian Kitchen on West Warner Road has a kids menu and a big patio, and describes its crowd as cyclists, families and lunch regulars. Back on Southern Avenue, a short drive east of the history museum, Spokes on Southern is a locally owned, bike-themed bar and grill that opened in 2013; it describes a family-friendly atmosphere and has a patio overlooking a pond.
