Family days in Ahwatukee, season by season
Easy trails and Pecos Park when the weather is kind, Ironwood Library and the community center when it isn’t, and the traditions Ahwatukee families plan around.

Ahwatukee is built for families. The City of Phoenix, which counts Ahwatukee Foothills as one of its urban villages, describes it as a place of master-planned neighborhoods, sprawling school campuses and family-oriented outdoor living at the foot of South Mountain. The trick for parents is the calendar: the desert is generous from November to March and punishing in summer. Here is a year of family days, close to home.
Cool months: outside while you can
When the mornings turn crisp, the mountain is the obvious playground. The Pima Canyon Trailhead, off 48th Street at South Mountain’s east end, starts a cluster of gentle routes. The Pima Wash Trail and the Pima West Loop each climb only about 70 feet, according to the city’s trail list, which makes them good first hikes for small legs. Keep an eye out on longer outings: the city lists the Desert Classic among the South Mountain trails where Hohokam petroglyphs can be spotted, and asks visitors to look and photograph without touching.
Pecos Park, at 48th Street and Chandler Boulevard, is the everyday answer. It has a playground, sports fields, tennis and pickleball courts, a dog park and a skate park with features for beginners as well as advanced skaters. On Friday mornings this season, Ironwood Library brings Family Storytime outdoors to the park at 9:30, weather permitting, for children up to age five and their grownups. Scheduled dates run through February, with the next ones on Nov. 13 and 20 and Dec. 4 and 18.
On the west side, Desert Foothills Park adds another playground, ball fields and courts, and it is one of the parks where the city allows radio-controlled aircraft, model rockets and drones, as long as pilots follow city, state and federal rules. A school-age child with a new model rocket has a legal launch spot right in the neighborhood.
Hot months: library, gym and water
When the heat arrives, Ironwood Library, at 4333 E. Chandler Blvd., carries a lot of family life. It opened in 1991 and keeps a collection of Mexican folk art, pieces of which are often on display. The children’s calendar runs all year: BabyTime for babies up to two, Music & Movement for children up to five, with free tickets handed out at the desk 30 minutes before each session, and MakersBase, a drop-in makerspace for ages 6 to 11 with materials provided and no ticket or registration needed. Older children can join the Monday afternoon chess club, which starts with a short lesson, and teens can play Dungeons & Dragons twice a month.
The Pecos Community Center, beside the park, has more than 38,000 square feet, including a full-size gymnasium, a game room, a teen space and classrooms for city classes and programs. It is a good place to burn off energy indoors on a scorching summer afternoon.
For water, the Pecos Splash Pad opened for the season on March 20 this year and ran on weekends until the summer season began in late May, when it opened daily. Pecos Pool, in the same park, ran its 2026 summer season from Memorial Day weekend into early September, with open swim and swimming lessons. Check the city’s pages in spring for 2027 dates and fees. Off Warner Road, the Ahwatukee Community Swim, Tennis and Event Center offers open swim, youth swim lessons and a kids camp.
Traditions to plan around
Some Ahwatukee family dates are worth putting on the fridge.
- November: Light Up Ahwatukee’s Holiday Festival fills Desert Foothills Park on Saturday, Nov. 21, from morning until late. It is free to attend, with an inflatable park and rides, Santa’s Village and character meet-and-greets for children.
- December: the holiday lights on the Chandler Boulevard median, between 24th Street and Desert Foothills Parkway, have been a neighborhood ritual since 1986. On Saturday, Dec. 19, the Million Lights 5K adds a kids’ fun run under the lights at 6:30 p.m., before the 5K.
- First Fridays: from fall through spring, Ahwatukee First Fridays turns the Mountain Park Community Church campus on 48th Street into an evening carnival with food trucks, local makers, a kids zone and a car show. The organizers post upcoming dates on their event page.
- March: the Ahwatukee Community Swim, Tennis and Event Center has set its 21st Annual Chili Cookoff and Carnival for March 13 and 14, 2027.
- October: the same center hosted the 18th Tukee Fest this fall, benefiting the Kiwanis Club of Ahwatukee’s work with foster youth. Watch its events page next year.
Where to eat with the kids
Three Ahwatukee places make an easy stop after the park. Los Taquitos, at 4747 E. Elliot Road, is a family-run taqueria whose recipes go back more than 45 years; the Ahwatukee restaurant is one of three, and the menu runs from tacos and burritos to bowls and quesadillas. Moku Hawaiian Grill, at 4302 E. Ray Road, began in 2019 when two families set out to share Hawaiian-style plate meals, and its pineapple soft serve is a reliable bribe. In the same center, The Kolache Cafe opens early with sweet and savory kolaches, which travel well to a Friday storytime.
Whatever the month, Ahwatukee families rarely need to leave the village to fill a day.
