How Ahwatukee Eats: Sonoran Tacos, Green Chile and a Sunday Market

Ahwatukee doesn't have a single signature dish. What it has instead is a mix that mirrors the people who built it over the past fifty years: Sonoran and Mexican cooking rooted in the region, New Mexico's green chile carried west by transplants, Italian dining rooms that have become neighborhood living rooms, and a weekly farmers market that keeps local produce on the table. Ahwatukee Foothills is one of the City of Phoenix's urban villages; here is how it eats, and where locals send visitors to taste it.

Sonoran roots, close to home

Southern Arizona's cooking, shaped by the Sonoran Desert that stretches across the border into Mexico, is the backbone of everyday eating here. Los Taquitos, in a shopping center on Elliot Road near 48th Street, is run by a family that has been cooking Mexican food for more than 45 years and has fed Ahwatukee for much of the past 25. The menu reads like a street-taco stand's: carne asada, al pastor, carnitas, lengua and fish tacos dressed with onions, cilantro and red or green salsa.

Hillside Spot, the café at Warner Road and 48th Street, has leaned into the Sonoran style since it opened in 2009 as an independent breakfast place. Its lunch and dinner menu grew around tortas and other Sonoran plates, and it buys from long-running Phoenix suppliers: tortillas and the telera rolls for its tortas from a Phoenix bakery, delivered fresh daily, sausage from a downtown butcher, bread several times a week, locally roasted coffee and draft beer from Arizona breweries as far north as Sedona and Flagstaff. The owners describe it simply as keeping things local.

Green chile, New Mexico-inspired

Green chile is New Mexico's signature ingredient, and one Ahwatukee restaurant has built its whole identity around it. Green Chile Love, on Chandler Boulevard, is a scratch kitchen with a New Mexico-inspired, Southwestern menu: smothered burritos, stacked enchiladas and a "Mexican hamburger" wrapped in a tortilla and smothered in chile. Diners pick red, green or "Christmas," which means both, at heat levels from none to extra hot. It also takes preorders for fresh Hatch green chile, grown in New Mexico, for cooks who want to roast and freeze their own. Dave Castaneda of Green Chile Love is also one of the business owners who organize First Fridays Ahwatukee, the free monthly community night at Mountain Park Community Church.

Italian dining rooms

Caffe Boa, at Elliot Road and 48th Street, makes scratch Italian food with a patio, a happy hour and a new thin-crust pizza made with the owner's own sauce and a mozzarella blend finished with a little buffalo milk. Owner Patrick Larson has a habit of treating other restaurants as neighbors rather than competitors. In September 2026 diners who spent at least $30 at another Ahwatukee restaurant west of I-10 could bring the receipt to Caffe Boa for a second entrée free with the first, and this month the restaurant is collecting donations so St. Vincent de Paul can provide Thanksgiving meals.

Dishes that moved in

Because Ahwatukee was built by newcomers, its food also carries traditions from far away. The Kolache Cafe, at Ray Road and Ranch Circle, bakes kolaches fresh every morning: the soft, filled buns that began as Czech fruit pastries and became a Texas breakfast with sausage, egg and cheese baked inside. It serves both kinds, and the Ahwatukee café has a drive-thru for early commuters.

A few doors away in the same Ray Road center, Moku Hawaiian Grill was started in 2019 by two families, one from Hawaii and one from New Zealand, to bring Hawaiian plate-lunch comfort food to the Valley. Plates come with hand-breaded katsu chicken, kalua pork or grilled pulehu chicken and steak, with sides like kimchi slaw.

Sushi Nakano, in a Chandler Boulevard center, is run by owner and head chef Leo Nakano, who trained from childhood alongside his father, master sushi chef Hiro Nakano. The restaurant opens in the evening and sources its fish through Arizona seafood distributors.

The Sunday market

The most local food in Ahwatukee is sold in a parking lot. The Ahwatukee Farmers Market, held on Sundays since it was established in 2002 at the Ahwatukee Swim and Tennis Center on Warner Road, brings fresh seasonal produce, herbs, flowers, baked goods, natural meats and seafood, prepared foods and some local crafts. Vendors must be local direct producers or their family members or agents, and many are small growers. The market takes WIC and Arizona Farmers Market Nutrition Program vouchers and runs year-round, with earlier, shorter hours from June through September when the heat sets in.

With the market back on its cool-season schedule, it is an easy Sunday habit: pick up vegetables in the morning, then wander to a café nearby. That, more than any one dish, is how Ahwatukee eats: close to home, among neighbors, with a little green chile on the side.
