Family days in Avondale, season by season
Fishing ponds and wetland walks when the weather is kind, splash pads and library storytimes when it isn’t, and the city traditions that mark the year.

Families in Avondale learn to plan by the thermometer. From November into spring, the parks, ponds and wetland trails are at their best; by June the splash pads, the pool and the libraries take over. Here is how a year of family days can look in Avondale, with the free options marked where the city says so.
Cool months: parks, ponds and the wetlands
This is the season to spread out at one of the city's three community parks. Friendship Park on McDowell Road has three playgrounds, a fishing pond, a dog park and a Japanese garden that makes a calm detour between games. Festival Fields Park on Lower Buckeye Road gives older kids a skate park and a pump track, and Alamar Park in the south of the city has several playgrounds, a lake and an amphitheater. Closer to home, the new Civic Center Park, which opened in the past year, has a fenced, shaded playground, open lawn and a lighted walking loop.
The cool months are also fishing season. The ponds at Friendship, Festival Fields and Alamar are stocked through the Arizona Game and Fish Department's Community Fishing Program, generally monthly outside the summer pause, and children under 10 don't need a license. For a longer walk, the Crystal Gardens Wetland Trails loop around 14 lakes on level decomposed granite, which suits strollers with sturdy wheels and young walkers who like spotting birds.
Avondale's library has taken storytime outdoors, too. Its Rec and Read program pairs park storytimes and free books from the Words on Wheels bookmobile with fishing, soccer and basketball led by recreation staff. In October 2026 it earned the Arizona Library Association's Innovation in Community Award.
Hot months: splash pads, the pool and cool rooms
When the heat arrives, the splash pads at Friendship Park, Festival Fields, Alamar Park and Park Avenue Plaza open on weekends from April 1, then every day from Memorial Day to Labor Day, and on weekends again until Halloween. The city says they are free during operating hours. Park Avenue Plaza, on 114th Avenue, pairs its splash pad with a lake, a fountain, a koi pond and two footbridges.
The Avondale Aquatic Center on Civic Center Drive is for residents and their guests, with three big water slides, a lazy river, a zero-depth play pool and a water-walk challenge course, plus swim lessons. Bring proof of residency.
Indoors, both branches of the Avondale Public Library, Civic Center and Sam Garcia on Western Avenue, are cool places to spend an afternoon. At Sam Garcia, the weekly line-up includes Family Storytime on Thursday mornings, Wigglers to Walkers for babies and toddlers on Wednesday mornings, Youth Wednesdays for ages 5 to 12 and Teen Weekly for ages 13 to 17. This past summer the libraries also served free Kids Cafe lunches to anyone up to 18. Library cardholders can borrow an Act One Culture Pass for free general admission for two at museums such as the Heard Museum and Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix.
The renovated Mountain View Community Center on South Third Street has a game room, an esports room and an arts and crafts room, and it runs Avondale Rec Camps during school breaks year-round. At the Avondale Resource Center on East Riley Drive, the city schedules family programs such as Jungle Jill's live animal encounters for children up to 5 and Child & Family Resources playgroups, with registration required.
Traditions that mark the year
Avondale's calendar gives families something to circle in almost every season, and the city lists many of these events as free. WinterFest in early December brings Santa, a train ride under falling snow and the tree lighting to the Civic Center, and the Avondazzle Holiday Light Display runs nightly through New Year's Day, with a show on the city tree every half hour. Spring starts with Eggstravaganza at Donnie Hale Park, and KidFest, Avondale's celebration of Día de los Niños, fills Friendship Park in April. Summer means the Light Up the Sky Independence Day celebration, and fall brings Billy Moore Days and Creepin' Candy Crawl.
Where to refuel
Families have plenty of independent places for a treat between stops. Crepella Crepes & Waffles Cafe on North Dysart Road makes sweet and savory crepes and Belgian waffles to order and takes birthday cake orders. Crepe’s Garden on West Indian School Road pairs crepes with Mexican breakfast dishes. Near the Park Avenue Plaza splash pad, New Penny Cafe on North 114th Avenue bakes cinnamon rolls and cookies in-house. For dinner after a park day, Thai Orchid Garden on West Indian School Road is owned by the Aphaisuwan family and serves dishes like pineapple fried rice and fried banana.
Wherever the season finds you, the city's park and library pages are the place to check hours and registration before you head out.
