Parks, trails and outdoor places in Avondale
Fishing ponds, a wetland with nearly nine miles of trail, river paths and a restored wildlife area: how to get outside in Avondale, and the city rules that keep it safe all year.

Avondale sits where the Agua Fria, the Salt and the Gila rivers come together, and the city's parks and paths follow that water. Fishing lakes, a wetland with miles of trail, paved river paths and a restored wildlife area give residents a lot of ground to cover on foot, bike or with a fishing rod. Here is a guide to the main places, what's new this year, and the rules the city publishes for using them well in every season.
The big three community parks
Avondale has three community parks, open daily from early morning into the evening, while neighborhood parks and plazas close a little earlier; each park's city page lists its hours.
Friendship Park, on McDowell Road just north of Interstate 10, is the largest at more than 60 acres. Along with ballfields, nine multi-use fields, tennis and basketball courts, a dog park and walking paths, it has a community fishing pond and a Japanese garden. The city added eight pickleball courts there in the past year and improved the dog park and one of the multi-use fields.
Festival Fields Park, on Lower Buckeye Road west of the Agua Fria River, covers more than 40 acres and suits riders as much as ball players, with a skate park and a pump track beside its softball fields, pickleball courts, splash pad and fishing pond. Alamar Park, a 40-acre park on South El Mirage Road in the Alamar neighborhood, adds an amphitheater, a lake for urban fishing and an outdoor fitness court built with the National Fitness Campaign.
All three ponds are part of the Arizona Game and Fish Department's Community Fishing Program. The city says they are generally stocked monthly, with catfish, sunfish, bass or trout depending on the season, but not between June 25 and September 15 because of the heat. Anyone 10 or older needs a fishing license, and pond rules call for barbless hooks.
Trails and paths for walking, running and cycling
The Crystal Gardens Wetland Trails are the place for a longer, quieter walk. The city describes 8.75 miles of compacted decomposed granite trail winding around 14 lakes within a 72-acre wetland, with native plants, birds and fishing. The lakes are part of a water system: treated water flows through them before it is piped underground to a groundwater recharge site along the Agua Fria. There is no lighting, so plan for daylight.
The Van Buren Multi-Use Path runs 1.75 paved miles along the north side of Van Buren Street between 113th and 127th avenues, with shade landscaping and lighting. Look down as you go: the city built in tractor tire imprints, seed-inspired seating and other nods to Avondale's farming past. The Agua Fria Multi-Use Path follows the east levee of the river, starting beneath the I-10 overpass and running south under Van Buren. The city plans future phases north and south that would connect to the Tres Rios area and the Gila River.
Trail hours are sunrise to sunset. Wheels yield to pedestrians, everyone yields to horses, dogs stay leashed, and alcohol, glass and smoking are not allowed.
Close to the rivers
In the south of the city, near Phoenix Raceway, the Tres Rios Base and Meridian Wildlife Area protects about 198 acres of riparian and wetland habitat on the north bank of the Gila River where it meets the Salt, according to Arizona Game and Fish. Herons, egrets, quail and the Yuma Ridgway's rail, the marsh bird once called the Yuma clapper rail, use the area. The city lists restoring the Tres Rios to Base and Meridian Wildlife Area among its parks accomplishments of the past year, and the Tres Rios Nature Festival, with guided bird tours, returns there on February 27, 2027, with details on the city's festival page. Volunteers can also sign up through the Mountain View Community Center for Tres Rios clean-ups.
Staying safe in every season
The city's own rules are built around the heat. Splash pads at Friendship, Festival Fields, Alamar and Park Avenue Plaza run on weekends in spring and fall, daily in summer, and close from November through March. Bounce house setups aren't permitted in city parks from May through September because of high temperatures. From May 1 to September 30 the Avondale Resource Center on East Riley Drive serves as a heat relief site with cold water, and both city libraries act as hydration stations.
For storms, city events go on rain or shine except for lightning within 10 miles, winds over 20 mph or flooding, and the parks department keeps an inclement-weather phone line for field closures, updated each afternoon.
Maps, conditions and what's coming
Each park and trail has its own page on the city website with hours, amenities and directions, and the trails page links to a downloadable path and trail map, the Avondale Connect project and the Active Transportation Plan. More shade is on the way: the city has been planting shade trees at Alamar Park with volunteers this fall, and work has begun on the new Donatela Neighborhood Park.
Before and after
For coffee, a real-fruit smoothie or a treat for the dog before a walk, Modern Grind Coffee runs a drive-thru on West Rancho Santa Fe Boulevard and roasts with a family-owned Arizona roaster. A few doors down, Burn It Build It Fitness, a locally owned gym, offers classes, private training, nutrition coaching and recovery for the days you'd rather train indoors.
