Family days in Buckeye, season by season

Lakes, trails and holiday lights when the weather is kind; the pool, the libraries and a free museum when it isn't. A year of family outings close to home in Buckeye.

Raising kids in Buckeye means planning around the sun. From November to April, families can spend whole days outside at the parks and in the foothills; from late spring through September, the plan moves indoors or into the water. Here is a year of family outings close to home, with the free ones marked where the city says so.

Cool season: parks, trails and the lake

Sundance Park, on West Lower Buckeye Road, is where many Buckeye families start. It has large shaded playgrounds, lighted fields, volleyball and basketball courts, picnic ramadas you can reserve, a dog park and a fishing lake. On a mild Saturday it is easy to fill a morning there.

For a first taste of the mountains, try Skyline Regional Park on North Watson Road. Entry is free, the trails are open from sunrise to sunset, and the parking at Discovery Point and the North Trailhead was expanded in spring 2026. Bring all your water, because the park has none, and pick a short trail and a turnaround time before you set out. The city's interactive trail map helps with both.

In fall, the city's Movie in the Park series brings evening screenings to parks such as Windrose Park in Teravalis, with food trucks and activities from the city's Community Services team. In spring, the city's Spring Celebration fills Sundance Park in March with bounce houses, crafts, face painting and photos with the Easter Bunny, and the spring Concert in the Park series follows in March and April.

Holiday traditions

Buckeye's December has a rhythm many families keep year after year. Cotton Fest, in late November, brings inflatables, kids' activities, a classic car show and the tree lighting to the 6th Street Plaza downtown, with free photos with Santa that evening. From that night through New Year's Day, downtown and Sundance Park are lit up, and in 2026 Sundance hosts a walkthrough inspired by the Candy Land board game, with stations named for Gumdrop Pass, Peppermint Forest and Snowflake Lake.

Children can write to Santa and drop their letters in the North Pole mailboxes at the libraries, the museum, the recreation centers, the Senior Center or the Bookmobile. Letters left by the city's mid-December deadline with the child's full name and a return address get an answer. Santa also visits Sundance Park on Saturday evenings in December, the libraries host drop-in Santa open houses with cookies, crafts and stories, and Glow on Monroe, the free electric light parade, rolls down Monroe Avenue in mid-December.

In January, Buckeye Days brings the town's Old West roots to Town Park after the Cattle Drive Parade on Monroe. Children can try the pie-eating contest, visit the petting zoo and watch Dr. Buck's Wild West Show. At the end of February, the Buckeye Air Fair at the municipal airport adds a Kid's Zone to its airshow and aircraft displays.

Hot season: water and air conditioning

When the temperature climbs, the Buckeye Aquatic Center at Town Park becomes the center of summer. It has a zero-depth beach entry with water features for small children, a high dive and low dive, and a 160-foot water slide, plus swim lessons and pool parties. Sundance Park's splash pad runs from April 1 to October 31.

The two public libraries, the Coyote Branch on West Yuma Road and the Downtown Library on North 6th Street, work as family rooms all year, and the city has listed both as summer cooling centers. Their calendars include babytime and storytime for the youngest, Meet and Play, a Family Gamer's Lounge, robotics and STEAM clubs for older kids, and seasonal specials such as a pajama-friendly winter after-hours read-in and a family Nerf battle. Look up at the Downtown Library's programming room, where muralist Bekah Unsworth hid Sonoran animals throughout her book-themed mural for children to spot. A new Bookmobile, unveiled in Festival in March 2026, carries books to neighborhoods farther from either branch.

The museum: free, and best in the cooler months

The Buckeye Valley Museum, at 116 E. MC 85, is free and keeps a collection of pre-Columbian pottery, historic photographs and objects from Buckeye's early days. It is open on Wednesdays, Fridays and some Saturdays, and it closes every year from June through August, which makes it a fall, winter and spring outing. Older children may enjoy the recorded oral histories of longtime residents on the museum's web page before or after a visit.

Where to eat with kids

Downtown has several family-run options within a few blocks of Town Park. Cafe 25:35 on Monroe Avenue serves scratch-made breakfasts and lunches. Casa de Leyva, run by the Leyva family, has a weekend brunch and holds Lotería nights and other fiestas. Fusion of Buckeye by Jupiter Rings, a family-owned shop on North 7th Street, offers a dozen house wing sauces, from mild up, and vegan wings for anyone skipping meat. Planning a birthday? Carniceria y Taqueria Durango on East Monroe is both a meat market and a restaurant, and it sells piñatas. Out by Verrado, Someburros on North Verrado Way, the Vasquez family's Sonoran-style Mexican restaurant group, is an easy stop after a morning in the foothills.

Whatever the season, the city's events page and the library calendar are the two places to check each month. Between them, there is nearly always something on.
