Chandler has more than 60 parks and nearly 1,200 acres of developed parkland, from lake loops and ball fields to a canal trail that crosses much of the city. November is when the city moves back outdoors. Here are the places Chandler residents use most for walking, running and riding, what's new this year, and the safety advice the city itself gives for each season.

Veterans Oasis Park: wetlands in the southeast

Veterans Oasis Park, at 4050 E. Chandler Heights Road, covers 113 acres, and 78 of them are recharge basins and wetlands that put water back into the ground. That water draws birds: the city counts more than 153 species recorded here, which makes the park one of the Valley's known birding spots.

For walkers, there are about 4.5 miles of groomed dirt trails and a paved loop of roughly four-tenths of a mile around the 5-acre fishing lake. Horses are allowed on the designated equestrian trails, entered from outside the park. The lake is stocked every two weeks from mid-September through late May with catfish, trout, bluegill and bass, and anglers need an Arizona fishing license, which isn't sold on site.

The Native Plant Oasis, beside the Chandler Nature Center, is the park's newest point of pride. A 2024 grant from the Gila River Indian Community turned a former community garden into beds of native desert plants and a seed-harvesting area, and in 2026 it won the Arizona Parks and Recreation Association's Natural Resources Award. Free family bird walks start from the Red-Tailed Hawk Pavilion on the first Saturday of each month through April.

Tumbleweed Park and Paseo Vista: loops for every day

Tumbleweed Park, at 2250 S. McQueen Road, is the city's largest community park at about 200 acres. Its 1.3-mile paved sidewalk circles athletic fields and shaded pavilions, and it is a dependable choice for a walk before work. The park has a newly opened 18-court pickleball facility next to the 18-court Chandler Tennis Center, and the city finished a cricket pitch there this month, November 2026.

A mile and a half south, Paseo Vista Recreation Area, at 3850 S. McQueen Road, sits right on the canal. It offers two loops: a 0.73-mile stretch of the Paseo Trail and a 0.84-mile soft-surface trail around the park's edge. Between laps there is an 18-hole disc golf course, an archery range and a dog park.

On the west side, Desert Breeze Park, at 660 N. Desert Breeze Blvd. East, has paths around its lake and through the grounds, with shaded pavilions and the Hummingbird Habitat, a garden of plants that attract pollinators.

The Paseo Trail: Chandler's canal path

The Paseo Trail follows the Consolidated Canal for 6.5 miles. The east bank is a 10-foot-wide concrete path for walkers, runners, strollers and cyclists; the west bank is unpaved and used for horseback riding and bicycling. The first phase opened in 2001, and the city counts it as very popular with walkers, joggers and families pushing strollers.

A few rules keep it pleasant. The city asks people on bikes, scooters and skates to keep a reasonable speed and give walkers room. E-bikes, e-scooters and other motorized vehicles are not allowed on canal paths at all, although Class 1 and 2 e-bikes may use sidewalks and other shared paths elsewhere in the city.

The trail may grow. The city is studying a paved path for the last 1.2 unpaved miles between Riggs Road and Hunt Highway, with safer crossings at Riggs Road and 116th Street, which would create a continuous 9.2-mile north-south route. The study is in its early planning stage and the city is collecting comments through an online survey; nothing has been funded for construction yet. The city is also planning its 70th park, Mesquite Groves, near Val Vista Drive and Riggs Road.

After a canal walk on the east side of town, two directory businesses sit side by side on Gilbert Road just south of Germann. Mission Coffee & Tea roasts direct-trade coffee locally and serves pastries, sandwiches, teas and lemonade, and puts its proceeds toward local and global causes. Backyard Taco, a family business with roots in Mazatlan, grills its tacos over mesquite and has a patio for a post-ride lunch.

Staying safe through the seasons

Chandler's summer and monsoon guidance is plain: drink fluids often, rest in the shade, cover up against the sun, and skip strenuous exercise during the hottest part of the day. Its summer advice is to avoid sun exposure in the late morning and afternoon, when the rays are strongest. If a storm rolls in while you are on a trail, the city says to get to a building or a car and away from water.

Cooler months bring their own warning. In November 2025, Chandler police and fire launched a winter drowning-prevention campaign, noting that the city has many neighborhood lakes and that visitors unfamiliar with local canals are at particular risk. Their message holds for every park lake: constant, capable supervision of children near water, whatever the season. Salt River Project publishes its own canal-trail safety rules, linked from the city's Paseo Trail page.

Two seasonal notes: the city's splash pads close from November through March, and the parks page posts any restroom closures; in early November 2026 those at Apache, Folley and Navarrete parks were closed. Please don't feed the ducks or other wildlife.

Maps and conditions

Every park page on the city's website has a downloadable site map, and the Paseo Trail page has its own route map. For longer rides, the city's Bikes and Scooters page links to the Chandler Bike Map and the regional MAG Bikeways map; the League of American Bicyclists rated Chandler a Bronze-level Bicycle Friendly Community in 2023. The city also hosts a free Family Bike Ride each April.

For closures, the parks department posts flood-irrigation and rest schedules for its fields, and fields close on those days. Each park page lists a phone number for questions. Check the page before you go, bring more water than you think you'll need, and save the long loop for a cool morning.
