Family days in Gilbert, season by season

Ducks and dinosaur digs at Water Ranch in winter, a 17-foot climbing mountain in spring, a 1913 schoolhouse and storytime when summer drives everyone inside, and the traditions that bring Gilbert families downtown each fall.

Raising children in Gilbert means planning around the sun. From November into spring, families can be outside nearly every day; by June the best plans happen early in the morning or indoors. The good news is that the town has places for both, many of them close together, and a few cost little or nothing. Here's how a Gilbert family year can go.

Winter: the preserve, the ducks and the library next door

The cool months belong to the Riparian Preserve at Water Ranch, at Guadalupe and Greenfield roads. Its 110 acres hold seven ponds, more than four and a half miles of trails and play areas for children, and the habitat ranges from marsh to desert, so even toddlers can watch waterbirds from the paths and viewing blinds. There's a dino dig site, too, which groups can reserve. Feeding the ducks is allowed in one spot only: Water Ranch Lake, with bird seed, cracked corn or whole grain cereal rather than bread. Keep little ones on the trails and out of the ponds, which hold reclaimed water meant for wildlife, and keep dogs on short leashes.

The Southeast Regional Library sits right beside the preserve at 775 N. Greenfield Road and looks out over it, which makes for an easy pairing: a walk, then a stack of picture books.

December adds a special evening at the preserve. During Riparian After Dark, held each December (December 11 to 22 in 2026), thousands of holiday lights line the paved paths, which the town says are fully accessible for strollers and wheelchairs. Tickets are timed and required for everyone, though children three and under get in free.

Spring: a mountain to climb and a lake to walk around

When the weather is at its best, head to Gilbert Regional Park at Higley and Queen Creek roads, which reopened after its summer work. The Mountain is a 17-foot playground with three levels of climbing, seven slides, swings and a zip line, and The Creek is a smaller play area for the youngest visitors. A half-mile path circles the seven-acre lake, where families fish from the pier. The town has certified The Mountain, The Creek and the splash pad as autism-friendly and posts a sensory guide for each, helpful for children who like to know what's coming.

On the same stretch of Queen Creek Road, The Nook, a daytime eatery at 3321 E. Queen Creek Road, opens early for breakfast and serves until early afternoon, so a morning at the playground can end with pancakes. A little farther west, the Perry Branch Library at 1965 E. Queen Creek Road shares its home with Perry High School and is open to the public, with a kids' area plus board games, video games and puzzles.

One change to know about this year: at Freestone Park on Juniper Road, the lakes, the Freestone Railroad and its amusement rides are closed from June 2026 until May 2027 for work, and other areas of the park close for shorter stretches. Check the town's park page before promising anyone a train ride.

Summer: indoors and early

When the heat arrives, HD SOUTH at 10 S. Gilbert Road is a good place to spend a morning. The museum fills the original 1913 Gilbert Elementary School, the only building in town on the National Register of Historic Places, and children enjoy finding out that the gift shops were once the nurse's and principal's offices. Several exhibits are hands-on, a quilting bee works in the building on certain mornings, and on Saturdays the Gilbert Model Railroad Club runs its trains. Children under five get in free, and admission for older children is modest.

For younger children, McQueen Park Activity Center at 510 N. Horne Street turns its air-conditioned gym into Wiggle Worm Adventures every Friday morning, with balls, hoops, ride-on toys, tunnels and soft play for children six and under, for a small drop-in fee. On the second Friday of each month, Storytime Adventures with Bear is a free drop-in story and craft; bring a stuffed animal. The center has posted extended indoor play hours in past summers, so check its page as the heat builds.

Flancer's, on Gilbert Road just south of Guadalupe and in town since 1999, bakes its own bread for its sandwiches and is a short drive from McQueen. Sidewinder Subs, at 1455 W. Elliot Road, is another casual lunch stop on the west side, with turkey, meatball and Italian subs and online ordering for pickup.

Fall: the traditions

Gilbert's family calendar peaks when the heat breaks. The Gilbert Days Parade, held on a Saturday morning each November, sends dozens of floats and entries down Gilbert Road through the Heritage District, a tradition that began nearly 70 years ago to celebrate the paving of that road. The 2026 parade, on November 21, has more than 80 entries and a Hollywood theme, so expect movie characters.

Then comes the town's annual Water Tower Holiday Lighting at Water Tower Plaza; the 2026 lighting, on November 30, brings student musicians, a performance by Christie Huff and crafts for children while supplies last. Many Gilbert families mark the start of the holidays right there, looking up at the tower.

A year of family days here doesn't have to be elaborate. Pick a park for the cool months, a cool room for the hot ones, and let the town's traditions fill in the rest.
