Shopping LOCAL in Gilbert: from Vaughn Avenue to the farm on Ray Road
Romance novels and vintage finds downtown, farm goods and table linens at Agritopia, and Saturday art tables in two parts of town: where Gilbert shops independent this season.

Gilbert's independent shops don't sit on one long main street. They gather in a few places that each have their own character: the Heritage District around Gilbert Road and Vaughn Avenue, the farm and shops at Agritopia on Ray Road, and the green at Verde at Cooley Station on Williams Field Road. Pick one for a morning, plan around a market day, and leave time for coffee.
There are two new reasons to try a different route. Gilbert Art Walk added a second location at Cooley Station for its 2026-27 season, and Agritopia marked twenty years of its farm-centered gathering place in fall 2026, with Joe's Farm Grill reaching the same milestone.
The Heritage District: books, vintage and Saturday stalls
Downtown Gilbert is best known for its patios and restaurants, but it rewards a slower walk. The Bookish Shop, at 60 W. Vaughn Avenue, opened its Gilbert bookstore and coffee bar in 2025. Its shelves lean toward romance, from independent and traditionally published authors, along with bookish gifts. The shop describes itself as a women-owned Arizona small business, and its coffee bar works with an Arizona roaster and a Gilbert bakery, so a cup there keeps the money close to home too.
A short drive south along Gilbert Road, SCOUT Vintage Shoppe occupies 7 E. Palo Verde Street. Founder Jill built the shop with her husband and their three children, and it gathers secondhand finds, handmade goods and one-of-a-kind décor from a group of vendors. Because those vendors change out their spaces weekly, a return trip rarely looks like the last one. The shop closes one weekday to restock, so check its page before you go.
On Saturday mornings the Heritage District Farmers Market sets up at 92 W. Vaughn Avenue. The Arizona Urban Agriculture Foundation, a nonprofit, runs it as a market for local growers and makers, with free parking and leashed pets welcome. Bring a bag and a little patience for the crowd.
When it's time to sit down, Liberty Market at 230 N. Gilbert Road has served downtown since 2008. Its owners run it as an all-day café, restaurant and bar with an espresso counter, which makes it an easy place to set down your bags and look through what you found.
Just west of the district, Don Guerra's Barrio Bagel & Slice at 689 N. Arizona Avenue bakes bagels, artisan breads and pizza by the slice. Guerra, a James Beard Award winner, started as a garage baker, and a loaf from his ovens makes a good thing to carry home from a shopping morning.
Agritopia and Epicenter: a farm with shops around it
At Ray and Higley roads, Agritopia puts its shops around a working farm. The Farm Store, at 3000 E. Ray Road, sells produce grown at Agritopia Farm alongside dry goods from Arizona artisans and keepsakes. Some of its stock comes from around the Valley and beyond, so ask if you're set on something made in Gilbert.
Across the way at Epicenter, urbAna's Gilbert shop at 3150 E. Ray Road is built around gathering and entertaining: tableware, kitchen pieces, candles, home décor and gifts. Founded by Ana and Brian Wells, it is a good stop when you know how someone likes to host but haven't settled on a present.
The farm's restaurants make the visit a full outing. Joe's Farm Grill fills the 1966 Johnston family home and harvests fruit, vegetables and herbs from the farm for its burgers and breakfasts. Garage-East, in Building 7, pours specialty coffee and makes and serves its own Arizona wine; a bottle is an easy gift for anyone who likes to try local. It welcomes younger children only in the daytime, so families should plan an earlier visit.
The best time to see Agritopia's makers together is Farm Night, a free evening market on the first and third Wednesdays from September through May, skipping January. Farmers, bakers, soap makers and other local vendors set up around the Barnone Quonset hut and in front of the Farm Store. The farm posts each season's dates on its calendar.
Saturday art tables, downtown and at Cooley Station
Gilbert Art Walk brings local artists outdoors on Saturday mornings, with jewelry, painting, ceramics, woodworking and photography on the tables. Downtown, it sets up just west of the water tower at Page Avenue and Ash Street. Since the 2026-27 season, a second location fills the pavilion and green at Verde at Cooley Station, 3945 E. Williams Field Road.
The 2026-27 season runs from October through March. The usual pattern is first and third Saturdays downtown and second and fourth at Cooley Station, but around the holidays both locations share dates, so check the organizer's schedule before you go. Talk to the artists: most are glad to explain a glaze or a finish, and a commission often starts with that conversation.
Why it matters here
Shopping these places keeps Gilbert's own people in business. SCOUT's tables belong to individual vendors; the Farm Store sells what grows a few steps away; the Art Walk's booths are artists' own. The Bookish Shop's coffee comes from an Arizona roaster and its pastries from a Gilbert bakery. Those are small connections, but they add up to a town where a gift has a story behind it.
Start with one stop and one purchase you'd have made anyway, a birthday present or a host gift, and buy it from a neighbor this time.
