Family Days in Goodyear, Season by Season

Splash pads and pump tracks, a library on Civic Square, free ice skating in December and a desert park at the city's edge: how Goodyear families spend the year.

In Goodyear, the family calendar turns on the weather. From November into spring, the parks, washes and desert trails are at their best and Civic Square fills with evening events. When summer arrives, the plan shifts to water, shade and air conditioning. Here is how a Goodyear family can spend the year, using the city's own parks, the library on Civic Square, the county park at the city's southern edge and a few neighborhood places to refuel.

The cool months: parks, washes and the desert

Goodyear Community Park, at Litchfield and Thomas roads, packs a full day into one stop. The city lists a playground and tot lot, a skate park, a dog park, sand volleyball, ball fields, tennis and pickleball courts, walking trails and ramadas with grills that can be reserved for a birthday. The skate park is for skateboards, inline skates and scooters, and children under nine need an adult with them.

For little ones who want to roam, Bullard Wash Park stretches through 61 acres north of the freeway between Virginia Avenue and McDowell Road. It has three tot-lot playgrounds, a swing set, an amphitheater and a lighted, traffic-free path that passes under Virginia Avenue and Monte Vista Road, with fitness stations along the way for the grown-ups.

Older kids with bikes should know about Foothills Community Park on South Estrella Parkway. Its pump track, built in two phases and maintained by volunteers, is open from sunrise to sunset, and the city requires helmets for every rider.

The best of the season sits at the city's southern edge. Estrella Mountain Regional Park, run by Maricopa County, covers nearly 20,000 acres and was the county's first regional park, established in 1954. Its Nature Center is home to a small group of animal ambassadors, among them snakes, a tarantula and a tortoise that rangers introduce at programs, and November brings ranger-led walks such as a Desert 101 hike and a Discovery Station program, several of which require registration. For a short outing with small children, the Gila Trail is a half-mile, hike-only, barrier-free path. Families who like a goal can join the county's 100 Miles in 100 Days challenge, which runs from November 1, 2026, to February 8, 2027.

The hot months: water and air conditioning

When the temperature climbs, Goodyear Community Park's splash pad is the outdoor option, best early in the day. For a full indoor day, the Goodyear Recreation Campus on Estrella Parkway has a 48,000-square-foot recreation and aquatics center with a multipurpose gym, an indoor track and a 25-yard lap pool. It is for Goodyear residents and their guests, and a pass is required, from day use up to annual.

Swimming here is a point of local pride. In September 2026, the city's Goodyear Sharks Swim Team, which serves 320 young swimmers, won the Arizona Parks and Recreation Association's Outstanding Aquatics Program award. The city also offers swim lessons for every level, and its June 2026 InFocus issue gathered heat and pool safety tips and cooling center information for residents.

The library is the other summer refuge. The Georgia T. Lord Library on Civic Square, a Maricopa County Library District branch named for Goodyear's first female mayor, moved into its current building in 2022. Beyond books, it lists an early literacy computer, video games, telescopes, an InnovationHub, study rooms and a Friends of the Library bookstore.

Free and low-cost outings

Several of the city's best family events cost nothing. The Rinq, the synthetic ice rink at Goodyear Civic Square, offers free skating for residents and non-residents on December weekends through January 3, 2027, with skates provided in toddler through adult sizes. Bring socks and plan on a 30-minute session. Admission, activities and parking are free at the Star Spangled 4th at Goodyear Ballpark, and the city describes Theater in the Park at the Bullard Wash Amphitheater, planned for March 2027, as free and open to the public.

At Estrella Mountain Regional Park, the county waives day-use entry fees on select days, such as National Take a Hike Day in November.

Traditions through the year

Goodyear's calendar gives families something to look forward to in every season. Holidays on the Square fills Civic Square on December Friday nights with themes such as Yule Y'all, a Western-flavored evening, and Jingle Jam, a sing-and-dance-along night. Spring has brought Hop & Hops to the Recreation Campus, with egg hunt zones and a treat trail. Summer has Juneteenth Family Day, now held at Goodyear High School, and the Star Spangled 4th drone show. In October, the Fall Festival takes over Goodyear Ballpark with trick-or-treating on the field and costume trophies. During spring training, the ballpark's Kids Run the Bases days return, with 2027 dates still to be announced.

Where to refuel

A family day goes better with breakfast. Waffletto, a family-run coffee shop at Litchfield Road and Van Buren Street, makes fresh Belgian waffles alongside brunch plates. Country Griddle on North Dysart Road serves homestyle breakfast and lunch. Down in Estrella, Oasis Bagels, a family-owned shop on West Elliot Road, bakes bagels daily and is close to the regional park. And after a long afternoon outside, Taste of Italy, a few doors down on Elliot Road, makes pizza, pasta and wings to pick up on the way home.
