Welcome to Goodyear: a cotton town grown into a West Valley city
Where Goodyear sits, how its pieces fit together, how the seasons shape the year and where a newcomer goes first, from City Hall and the library to the ballpark.

Goodyear began as a company farm. In 1917 Paul Litchfield, an executive of the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, bought 16,000 acres here to grow cotton, which tire makers needed for airplane tires and which was scarce during World War I. The people living around those fields chose the name Goodyear in 1944, the town incorporated in 1946, and it became a city in 1985.
The growth since then is the first thing a newcomer notices. Goodyear had just over 18,000 residents in 2000; the city now counts more than 111,000. Its first real downtown opened only in 2022, and some of its newest streets are still being built. If you have just arrived, you are in good company.
Where Goodyear sits
Goodyear is in the West Valley, less than 20 minutes from downtown Phoenix by the city's own reckoning. Interstate 10 runs through it, and the Loop 101 and Loop 303 freeways are close by. Look up from almost any parking lot and you will find mountains: the White Tank Mountains in one direction and the Sierra Estrella in the other.
The Sierra Estrella, whose name means "Star Mountains," gives its name to a great deal of Goodyear, from Estrella Parkway to the Estrella community. Estrella Mountain Regional Park, at the foot of the range, holds 19,840 acres of desert and mountains and became the first park in Maricopa County's regional system in 1954. It lies near the meeting of the Gila and Agua Fria rivers, and after winter rains and monsoon storms its low ground fills into seasonal wetland.
How the city fits together
Goodyear is easiest to learn by its anchors. Downtown, called GSQ, has grown up around Goodyear Civic Square at McDowell Road and 150th Drive. City Hall, the library, a two-acre park and two parking garages opened there in August 2022 on land that was a scallion farm when its family owners bought it in the 1970s. New restaurants and shops keep arriving, and a hotel broke ground there in October 2026.
South of the freeway, Goodyear Ballpark sits east of Estrella Parkway, and the Estrella community, open since 1988, now has more than 65 miles of trails that reach toward the mountains. PebbleCreek is a 55-and-older community with 54 holes of golf and more than 100 clubs. Palm Valley grew on the 13,000 acres of the original Goodyear Farms that were sold to a developer in 1986, and the city's oldest blocks are around Western Avenue and Litchfield Road, where the company town's first homes and stores went up in the 1940s.
For trips without a car, WeRIDE offers on-demand shared rides on weekdays within a zone covering central Goodyear. The city's trail network includes more than 14 miles of paved multi-use path and 12 miles of unpaved trail, including the Bullard Wash and Roosevelt Canal trails, and a nearly three-mile extension linking City Hall, GSQ and Goodyear Ballpark is planned. Goodyear also adopted new rules for e-bikes and e-scooters in 2026, and the police department has explained them in an episode of the city's podcast.
Living by the seasons
The nearest long-term federal weather station, in neighboring Litchfield Park, averages a January high of about 66 degrees and a July high of about 106, with roughly eight inches of rain a year. Its winter nights are cooler than Phoenix Sky Harbor's, averaging about 43 degrees in January.
Goodyear's calendar bends around those numbers. Spring training brings crowds from late February to late March, and in March 2026 an early heat wave moved two afternoon games at Goodyear Ballpark into the evening. Summer is for pools, early walks and storm preparation: each June the city's magazine covers heat and pool safety, cooling centers, monsoon readiness and the free sandbags it stocks around town. When the heat breaks, outdoor life comes back. The city's fall and holiday calendar has included Chalk Art in the Park at the Goodyear Recreation Campus, Holidays on the Square at Civic Square Park and The Rinq, a free synthetic skating rink open on December weekends into early January.
Places that make Goodyear feel like home
Goodyear Ballpark, opened in 2009, is the spring home of the Cleveland Guardians and the Cincinnati Reds, which gives Goodyear a curious March population of Ohio fans. The 86-acre Goodyear Recreation Campus, with an aquatic center, gym and indoor track, is open to residents with a pass. Estrella Mountain Regional Park is where many residents first learn desert trails.
Everyday places matter just as much. Enroute Coffee and Tea on West Roosevelt Street is a locally owned espresso bar started by two friends, Brittany and Deni, and it now runs an all-day breakfast and lunch kitchen as well. Country Griddle on North Dysart Road cooks homestyle breakfast and lunch. In Estrella, Café Bebida serves coffee, gelato and small bites inside the community's Welcome Center, near the Star Tower. And CrossFit Fury on Bullard Avenue, just south of I-10, has been coaching since 2008, with classes for beginners, kids and people coming back to exercise later in life.
Your first stops
City Hall is at 1900 N. Civic Square. The Goodyear311 website, whose phone app arrived in 2026, takes reports of broken streetlights, graffiti and road debris, and GY Alerts sends emergency updates by text, email or phone. The city's online HOA map tells you which neighborhood you live in, who manages it, and how to sign up for neighborhood alerts.
The Georgia T. Lord Library, a Maricopa County Library District branch in a 20,200-square-foot building beside City Hall, is named for Goodyear's first woman mayor. It has study rooms, a Friends of the Library bookstore and even telescopes. For local news, the city publishes InFocus, a monthly magazine, and a video podcast called Inside Goodyear; the West Valley View newspaper covers the city too. The Southwest Valley Chamber of Commerce, on Litchfield Road, serves Goodyear along with Avondale, Litchfield Park and Tolleson.
Start with one trail, one coffee shop and one Friday night on the square. The rest of Goodyear comes quickly after that.
