Family days in Mesa, season by season
Playgrounds, pump tracks and desert loops for the cool months; dinosaurs, storytime and pinball for the hot ones; and the winter traditions Mesa kids look forward to.

Raising kids in Mesa means living by two calendars. From November to April the parks, trails and downtown streets are the main event; from late spring through September the plan moves indoors to museums, arcades and shady mornings. Here is how Mesa families can fill both halves of the year, with a few traditions that come around every winter.
Cool season: get them outside
Riverview Park, on Rio Salado Parkway in west Mesa, is many families' first stop. Its shaded playground has a 50-foot climbing tower and a long rope-climbing structure shaped like a caterpillar, there is a fishing lake, and the splash pad keeps running on shorter winter hours from November through February. The Rio Salado Pathway starts here too, flat and paved for little bikes and strollers.
In northeast Mesa, Red Mountain Park's lake, shaded playground and long unpaved walking path give older kids room to roam, and nearby Red Mountain Nature Park has three short marked loops through the desert, the shortest a quarter mile, which is about right for a preschooler. In the southeast, Signal Butte Park's newly built second phase, a city project scheduled to finish in fall 2026, adds pump tracks and about a mile and a half of paths linked to the original park by a bridge over the wash. Desert Trails Park also has two pump tracks for kids who are ready to ride.
For a bigger outing, Maricopa County's Usery Mountain Regional Park sits at the city's northeast edge. Its nature center is open daily through the cool season, and the county runs beginner programs such as desert hikes and birding walks. Entry is waived on November 17 for National Take a Hike Day.
One note before you pack the car: Mesa has closed the playgrounds at Augusta Ranch Park through December and at Carriage Lane Park into January for renovations, so check the city's park pages first.
Hot season: museums, books and pinball
When the afternoons turn hot, downtown Mesa's two museums are a few blocks apart. The idea Museum on West Pepper Place is built for young children, with hands-on exhibitions and daily programs; its current show, Artfully Absurd, leans into creative chaos. Babies under one and veterans get in free, and families using EBT, SNAP or WIC pay a reduced rate through the Museums for All program.
The Arizona Museum of Natural History, on North Macdonald, is the place for dinosaur lovers, with mammoths, meteorites and Native American history besides. Kids can pan for gold, build a Mayan city and live through a simulated flash flood. Children two and under are free, and the museum takes part in Museums for All too.
Beyond Words Bookshop, in the Greenbelt building across from the natural history museum, holds a free storytime for babies through preschoolers every Wednesday morning, with siblings welcome and occasional visits from children's authors. And for a scorching summer afternoon, Atomic Age Modern at 140 W. Main St. keeps more than 30 pinball machines, from electromechanical classics of the 1970s to new titles, at coin-op prices, and hosts tournaments open to beginners.
Mesa Arts Center's Mesa Contemporary Arts Museum offers free one-hour guided tours on Saturday afternoons, a gentle introduction to a gallery for older kids. In summer, the city's aquatic complexes, such as Carson and Brimhall, open for the season; in 2026 they closed in late July as school returned.
Winter traditions worth keeping
Merry Main Street is Mesa's holiday season in one place. It opens on Friday, November 27, with a free holiday market around the downtown Christmas tree and the tree lighting, and the season brings an outdoor ice rink at the Plaza at Mesa City Center, with daily details on the festival's website. From December 11 to 13, the Mesa Santa Express turns a light rail car into a rolling party on Main Street, with cookies, songs and Santa; kids are encouraged to come in pajamas, and riders need a commemorative ticket.
The Downtown Mesa Sunset Market adds a free family evening on the second Friday of each month, on November 13 and December 11, and January 8 and February 12. And Ballet Etudes' 40th season of The Nutcracker plays Mesa Arts Center from December 12 to 20, a first ballet for many local children. When winter turns to spring, the Cubs return to Sloan Park, inside Riverview Park, for spring training.
Where to refuel
Lost Dutchman Coffee House, at 12 N. Center St., makes its own ice cream and serves it in shakes, floats and scoops, an easy reward after the natural history museum. Myke's Pizza, at 31 S. Robson St. a short walk from the idea Museum, calls itself a family-friendly spot and serves wood-fired pizzas and shareable plates inside a cider taproom, with weekday lunch sandwiches too.
Plan ahead
Hours, programs and holiday schedules change through the year, so check each place's page, listed below, before you go. In Mesa, the best family days usually start early, whatever the season.
