Family Days in Peoria, Season by Season: Fishing Lakes, Splash Pads and City Traditions

Where Peoria families go through the year: playgrounds and fishing lakes when it's cool, splash pads and libraries when it's hot, and the city traditions kids count down to.

Peoria families plan their weekends around the weather. From November into spring, the parks, fishing lakes and trails are where children spend Saturday mornings. Once the heat arrives, the plan shifts to splash pads, the libraries and anything with air conditioning. Through it all runs a calendar of city traditions that many kids count down to.

Here is a season-by-season guide to where Peoria families go, drawn from the city's own parks, library and events pages.

Cooler months: playgrounds, fishing lakes and easy trails

Peoria's three community parks are the backbone of a cool-weather weekend. Paloma Community Park, at Lake Pleasant Parkway and Dixileta Drive in the north, has an inclusive-design playground, a fishing lake with a deck and plenty of open turf. Rio Vista Community Park on Thunderbird Road and Pioneer Community Park near 83rd and Olive avenues each have playgrounds and lakes too, and all three list a StoryWalk reading activity among their amenities.

The lakes are part of the state's community fishing program. Children under 10 don't need a fishing license, so a first catch can be as simple as a borrowed rod and a morning at the water. For help getting started, the city's free Get Hooked: Family Fishing Day at Paloma on December 5 teaches casting, gear and conservation basics to anglers 5 and older.

Older kids may prefer the 32,000-square-foot skate park at Rio Vista, which has lighting and shaded seating. Bikes and scooters aren't allowed in the skating area, and helmets are recommended. For a nighttime adventure, the park rangers' free Neon Night Hike on November 27 is open to ages 6 and up.

On Saturday mornings, Honey Hive Farms opens its farm stand at 14611 N. 83rd Avenue. Tim and Connie Moore have kept bees in Peoria since 2009, and a stop for a jar of their raw honey is an easy way to talk with children about where food comes from. Their hands-on beekeeping classes are for adults, and minors may join alongside a parent or guardian in a seat of their own.

Hot months: splash pads, libraries and indoor stages

From April 15 to October 15, the splash pads open at Rio Vista, Pioneer, Paloma and Camino a Lago parks. Visit Peoria lists them as free. Pioneer's has a bucket that dumps 300 gallons at a time, and Rio Vista's has a spraying turtle and water cannons.

The Peoria Public Library has two branches, the Main Library on Monroe Street downtown and Sunrise Mountain Library on 98th Avenue. Both run free programs year-round, including storytimes, teen clubs and family events, and a library card is open to any Maricopa County resident. This fall's Local Heroes storytime series brought park rangers and a touch-a-truck morning with city vehicles to the Main Library, which gives a sense of how lively the children's calendar can be.

TheaterWorks, the community theater at the Peoria Center for the Performing Arts downtown, is another indoor option. Its family musical Seussical plays February 5 to 21, and its TheaterAlive classes for tots, kids and teens begin new sessions in February.

Downtown's Osuna Park, the city's oldest park, has a small surprise in Harmony Park, a free outdoor musical display of bells, tubes and a xylophone open to all ages and abilities. It is best on a mild morning, followed by a drink at Driftwood Coffee on Jefferson Street, a short walk away.

Traditions that mark the year

October belongs to the city's Halloween Monster Bash, which moved in 2026 to the Peoria City Hall campus and Centennial Plaza with trick-or-treating, a costume contest and kids' activities, free to attend. The same month, the Main Library's Fall Into Reading celebration fills October with reading challenges, performances and hands-on events. The Peoria Sports Complex also hosts the Grand Slam Campout, when families can pitch a tent in the outfield and sleep on the same field the pros use.

December brings the free Peoria Holiday Festival downtown, set for December 12 this year, and TheaterWorks' A Christmas Carol from December 4 to 20. In late February, spring training returns to the Peoria Sports Complex, where the Padres and Mariners open their 2027 schedules against each other on February 19. And every Fourth of July, the city's All-American Festival at the sports complex brings fireworks, water slides and live music.

School breaks have their own options. The city's Thanksgiving Week Kids Camp runs November 23 to 25 for kindergarten through eighth grade at Colton Boll and Coyote Hills elementary schools.

Family stops between outings

North Peoria families heading home from Paloma pass Fabio On Fire's Pizzeria Italiana on Lake Pleasant Parkway, where Chef Fabio serves wood-fired pizza, pasta and house-made gelato from family recipes. Before school photos or a holiday program, The Blvd Salon on Happy Valley Road lists children's cuts alongside its adult services.

Pick one park for the cool months, one indoor favorite for the summer and one tradition to put on the calendar, and a Peoria family year has a shape.
